Rental Truck Checklist

Here are some helpful tips for self moving cleints:

  • Gather moving costs from three truck rental companies one month before your move.
  • Develop a detailed floor plan of your home, apartment or office for furniture placement.
  • Create an list of junk and household goods to keep or throw out.
  • File your moving paperwork in a separate drawer of your desk (estimates, moving quotes, receipts, etc.)
  • Go online post office (usps.com) to change your address.
  • Have a detailed list of your items ready for the customs offical if moving to Canada with a rental truck.
  • Make arrangements for self-storage if necessary.
  • Ask your doctor to foward all medical records to new doctor or HMO.
  • Hire your rental truck company as soon as possible.
  • Donate left over food and cleaning supplies to your local food shelter.
  • Schedule disconnection of all utility services at your old home, and connection of them at your new one.
  • If you are packing yourself, obtain packing materials such as (tape, bubble wrap,boxes etc.).
  • Check with your insurance company to see how your moving possessions and rental truck are covered during transit.
  • Make any travel plans necessary for your move.
  • Collect important records.
  • Properly dispose of items that cannot be moved, such as flammable liquids.
  • If you are moving in or out of an apartment, arrange for use of the elevator.
  • Buy security lock for your rental truck or self storage.
  • Get an online map form (mapquest.com) of your new city.
  • Defrost refrigerator and freezer, propping doors open.
  • Clean, disconnect and wrap major appliances eletrical cord for move.
  • Pack a box of items that will be needed first at the new house. Clearly mark this box "Load Last".
  • For the safest move get driving directions from (mapquest.com).
  • Dismantle beds.
  • Mark fragile items "fragile top load".
  • Dispose of flammables items from lawnmower or snowblower.
  • A typical rental trucks mileage is 15 to 8 mpg, so make sure your check your gas gauge frequently.
  • Add a trailer for a 3 bedroom house move along with the biggest rental truck, if you are doing a big move.
  • The best time to rent a truck is the second week of the month (avoid weekends, holiday week, semester break!).
  • Make sure your rental truck is clean after use. Rental truck companies charge you to clean the truck.
  • A typical clearance height of a rental truck is between 8 to 12 feet high, so be sure to watch for low over passed.
  • Remember, you cannot make sharp turns in a rental truck.
  • Make sure you return the moving truck with full tank of gas.
  • Understand the terms of your contract and if the truck needs to be refueled when you return it.
  • Call the day before to verify that your rental truck is available, even if you have confirmed the reservation.
  • Check to see if your rental truck runs diesel or regular gas.
  • Before driving the truck, make sure you are comfortable. Adjust the seat and mirrors. Locate the fuel gauge and emergency brake.
  • Check with your own insurance agent to find out if you're insured against an accident or theft when you rent your truck.
  • Do a safety check to ensure the turn signals, brake lights, a/c, heater and windshield wipers work well.
  • Consider taking your cellular phone with you in case you need to contact someone if you are having problems with the rented truck.
  • Make sure the truck agents can provide you with the proper size rental truck for your moving job.
  • Allow yourself plenty of travel time when driving the truck. It often takes longer to drive a truck to your destination because of its big size and weight.
  • Allow plenty of distance between your tuck and traffic. Often it takes longer for a truck to stop than a car.
